Visual Treatment for "Russian Doll" (Part 1)
Pre-Production design for original Netflix series "Russian Doll"
Lyonne and Headland approached me a couple years ago asking if I could help visually translate their unique vision of a dark comedy which "follows a young woman named Nadia (Lyonne) on her journey as the guest of honor at a seemingly inescapable party one night in New York" (quote from The Hollywood Reporter article announcing production).
My first task was developing a pitch treatment, which Lyonne and Headland could use to "sell" the idea to Netflix. The treatment needed to synthesize multiple established genres while showcasing the unique nature of the show. From a design standpoint, my main challenge was balancing the funny, the bizarre, and the uncanny.
